We have made this collection of activities and educational resources over years of programming at Hallberg Butterfly Gardens. These are free for personal use or in educational settings, such as classrooms, presentations, or homeschooling groups.

Educational Activities

  • Butterfly Host Plant List & Observation Form - Review examples of local butterflies and the plants their caterpillars eat (host plants) and record your observations of butterfly activity throughout their lifecycle. Please be mindful not to disturb plants and animals while making observations.

  • Picture Guide/Common Lepidoptera of HBG - This guide includes 12 common moths and butterflies (Lepidoptera) at Hallberg Butterfly Gardens. Includes photos of the caterpillar and adults!

  • HBG Search and Find

  • Caterpillar Matching Game (print double-sided!) - Revised version 2024. Can you match the caterpillars with the moth or butterfly they turn into? After printing this game on the double-sided setting on your printer, cut out the square caterpillar and moth/butterfly cards. You can check the answers on the answer sheet or flip over each card to see if the numbers match each other.

Plant Lists
