Public Tours

Open by appointment April - October.

Tours are donation-based. All funds directly support the Gardens.

Please review the tour information before booking an appointment.

We offer both guided and self-guided tours with different availability and guidelines. Donations are accepted onsite or online. Resources and activities are located at the bottom of this page. We love your pets, but please leave them at home.

Self-Guided Tour

  • April - October

  • Wednesday - Saturday

  • Start times: 10 am, 11:30 am, 1 pm, or 2:30 pm

  • Duration: 1 hour and 30 minutes

  • No pets, no smoking or strollers

For groups of more than 10, please contact us to schedule.

This is an entirely self-guided experience and a gate code is required to enter the gardens. The gate code is sent by email after booking an appointment. Educational brochures with a garden map are available at our information kiosk.

Guided Tour

  • Start time 11 am

  • Duration: 1hr to 1hr 30mns.

  • No pets, no smoking or strollers

Learn about the butterfly life cycle and the History of the Gardens from an informative guide. Guests will be greeted at our information kiosk by a Hallberg Docent (tour guide). A gate code is required to enter the gardens. The gate code is sent by email after booking an appointment.

Tour Resources

  • We offer a standard Self-Guided Brochure and an Interactive Children’s Brochure—available onsite at our information kiosk.

  • We suggest $5-10 per child, $10-15 per adult, and $7-15 for Seniors and Students.

    • Drinking water is NOT provided.

    • Trails are dirt paths and not certified as wheelchair accessible. We are working on the trails near our entrance to improve accessibility.

    • Benches are located along the garden trails.

    • Picnic tables are located near the information kiosk.

  • Please note the parking instructions while signing up (instructions will also be sent in the tour confirmation email).

    Garden parking is limited per appointment—public parking is available for excess cars or large vehicles. Carpooling encouraged.

    Parking Directions:

    Garden Parking - along the apple orchard - this parking space is within the garden grounds and is reserved for tours and small events. After entering the Gardens gate, turn right and pull off the side of the gravel road at the end of the apple orchards (parking signs are visible). Please be sure to leave space for passing vehicles. This space is limited to 5-10 cars in the apple orchard, depending on the working season. See Map with Garden Parking

    Public (street) Parking: Along the road or within a small gravel lot located near the HBG entrance sign along Oak Grove Ave. Please pay attention to posted street parking regulations. Guests are asked to walk in through the gate and enter the Gardens on foot. Roughly a 3-5 min walk. This space is limited to 7-10 cars. Please reach out if you require accessible parking within the garden grounds. See the map for a view of public parking.

  • Each appointment is blocked for 1 hour and 30 minutes. To walk the trails without stopping takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Take your time!

    • Benches are placed throughout the Gardens.

    • A picnic table is located near the entrance.

  • April to June is the most popular time to visit when the large swallowtail butterflies are most active.

    Butterfly Stone Scavenger Hunt: Butterflies and their host plants are painted on nine stones throughout the Gardens. Will you find them all?

  • Our Gift Shop in the Pipevine Theater will remain closed until further notice (Barn is under restoration).

    A Fold-out Butterfly guide is for sale at our information kiosk for $10.

    Book sales will be available at Plant Sales and Open Gardens Day!
